Hey! I'm Xabier Laiseca

I was born and raised in Bilbao, a small city located in the north of Spain. I studied Software Engineering BSc and MSc at the University of Deusto.

I moved to London on July 2012 to join the Ocado Technology team. In March 2013, I joined Gamesys where I worked as Java Developer, DevOps and finally as Technical Architect in the Core Platform. Three years later, in 2016, I became part of Schibsted's Products and Technology team where I became Senior Staff Engineer. In 2019, I decided to look for an SRE role and I joined Confluent where I'm a Staff Software Engineer in the Kubernetes Platform Team.

I'm now back to Bilbao from where I work remotely.

I'm a Staff Software Engineer in the Kubernetes Platform Team. As part of this team, I contribute to the system responsible for managing thousands of production kubernetes clusters. Myself, I'm leading and delivering projects regarding our system's scalability and kubernetes clusters management. I have lately bocame mentor of more junior engineers and I'm commited to help them grow.

(May 2016 - September 2019)
I joined the Audience Targeting Engine team as Senior Scala Developer. In there, I was able to significatly grow as an individual contributor reaching Senior Staff Engineer position. As part of that team, I led and delivered multiple projects including: segment population estimation using Theta Sketches, scalable architecture of the targeting engine, migration to kubernetes and implementation of a custom CNI plugin with support for security groups based on AWS CNI.

(March 2013 - May 2016)
I joined as Java backend developer at Payments and Risk development team. In a year time, I moved to the newly created Platform team that was responsible for the implementation and design of the new Continuous Delivery pipeline, crosscutting services, internal microservice framework development, etc. By the end of September 2015 I was promoted to Technical Architect.

I joined as a Java Web developer to build a brand new shop website software to host all new websites the business was planning to release (Fetch, Sizzle).

(September 2006 - June 2012)
I joined as associate researcher being in charge of the implementation of local and Spanish government funded projects. From 2008 on, as I was promoted to researcher, I got involved in the management of European and Spanish projects. My main research focus was around ambient intelligence and ambient assisted living.
